Five Weekend Projects for Your Garden

Gravel Suppliers Cambridge | Five Weekend Garden Projects

Time is often the gardener’s worst enemy. Often there aren’t enough hours in the day to complete all the tasks you want. This is particularly true now the Easter holidays are over, and you might not get much spare time until the summer break.

One way of keeping on top of everything is to identify projects which can be completed in the space of a weekend. Here, Madingley Mulch have highlighted five examples which should noticeably improve your garden.

Madingley Mulch – Gravel Suppliers in Cambridge

At Madingley Mulch, we stock a wide variety of gardening products – not just mulches and soil conditioners. Many of these will help with small-scale projects that will make a real difference to your garden. For our full range, go to our online shop here.

1. Build Raised Garden Beds

You can use sleepers or scaffold boards to quickly create new planting areas for vegetables or flowers. Because you are dealing with a small growing area, these types of beds make it easy to improve your soil quality (in the case of gardens in the East of England, your soil is likely to be heavy in clay).

So a raised bed (above) would give you the chance to grow something you wouldn’t ordinarily be able to. Click here to see our range of soils, conditioners and composts which should ensure that, whatever you choose to grow in your new bed, it should thrive. Our selection includes two products which are exclusive to Madingley Mulch, Tony’s Tonic and Denise’s Delight.

And we also stock railway sleepers, which can easily form the basis of your raised bed. If you need any help with constructing your new bed, check out our previous blog post here.

2.Clean or Replenish Your Driveway

Driveways often need a clean – you can hose them down, power wash them, as well as weed them. Sometimes, if you have a gravel drive, the problem is stones and pebbles being lost – either due to erosion or natural wear. Equally, stones can be picked up in the soles of footwear or by car tyres and end up in parts of the garden you don’t want them in.

We have plenty of decorative stones in stock, which will ensure your driveway looks much better (and adds plenty of kerb appeal as it’s usually the main garden feature that is visible from the street or road). A few bags should be all you need to replenish your driveway.

3.Install Garden Edging

You can define lawns, flower beds and driveways with edging to quickly create a neat, organised, and intentional look.

There will be long-term benefits too – there is less chance of decorative stones being transported into other areas (such as your lawn, or inside the house) if there is a clearly defined and visible boundary which will keep any stones or mulch contained. Edging may also deter pets and children from stepping into your flower beds.

At Madingley Mulch, we stock kerb edging stones or, if you are after a more natural look, log rolls that can easily be used to create a border.

4.Add a Trellis

Build a simple trellis for climbing plants like ivy or jasmine to enhance vertical space and create a “green” wall. This can be done as a standalone structure or on top of an existing fence – the latter option will give you even more privacy if you are worried about security or nosy neighbours.

As a leading trellis fence panel supplier in the Cambridge area, we offer a variety of products in this area – either standalone or which can be added to the top of existing fences. Follow this link to learn more.

5.Refinish Patios or Decking

While a weekend probably isn’t long enough to lay down a patio or decking from scratch, it should give you enough time to power wash existing decking or paving stones to remove grime and stains, or to apply a fresh coat of stain to wooden furniture (including decking) and fences to make them look as good as new.

Why These Projects Fit in With 2026 Trends

In 2026, homeowners are focusing on “micro-zones” – small, highly curated areas like a doorstep display, a bistro corner, or a single raised bed. Many of these projects listed above fit into this trend.

FAQs

Q: Does Madingley Mulch offer a delivery service?

A: Yes, we do. Although all these projects are fairly small in scale, we appreciate it could be convenient to have the materials delivered to your door. We operate a sliding scale of charges; the closer you live to our base on the edge of Cambridge, the cheaper it will be. The minimum order value is £50. For more information, check out our deliveries page here.

Q: How many bags of soil or stones can I fit in my car, if I decide to visit in person?

A: Most standard hatchbacks can safely carry six to eight small bags of soil or stones without straining the suspension. Remember, a 25kg bag is roughly the same weight as a large suitcase – so lift them with your knees, not your back!

Q: Will rain put a stop to any work on a weekend garden project?

A: Not necessarily. If you’re laying aggregates or stones, rain is actually your friend—it washes off any dust and shows the true colour of the stones immediately. However, if you are digging, planting or laying mulch, heavy rain can make the ground boggy and difficult to work with. If it’s pouring, wait for a dry spell to avoid compacting your soil.
